
Lathe Safety with Answers

No student may work on a lathe or watch another student working on a lathe without safety glasses.

Never horseplay around the lathe.

Chuck keys are a frequent source of accidents in the shop and can fly out with considerable force when left in the chuck, do not release the chuck key until you are finished tightening the work piece.

Loose clothing including hoodie strings are not permitted when working on a lathe.

Rings or hanging jewellery are not permitted when working on a lathe.

Long hair must be tied up.

Students must know the exact position of the stop button before starting the machine.

Ensure the tool post, tool and if applicable the tail post is tight and positioned correctly and the tool is sharp.

Before starting the machine ensure the feed in not engaged.

Guards must be in place when taking heavy cuts.

Never attempt to remove cutting chips with your bare hands, use a tool. Always stop the machine when chips wind up on the work piece.

Check RPM before start up.

Pay attention to chuck rotation, reverse rotation can damage the tool, work piece and even cause the tool to break and fly off dangerously.

When attempting a new setup check with the instructor before start up.
